Hiking without trails
Welcome to the “High Desert Hikers of Las Cruces”– a new name and look for the original and traditional Turtle, Rabbit & Saturday hikes of the Ocotillo Hikers.  As you know, the Ocotillo Hikers has grown considerably over the years in both numbers and our hikers’ abilities and interests.  With this growth came additional hikes that were needed to augment the traditional hikes that were held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.  We also found it necessary to expand the venues of the new hikes in order to address, not only the growth, but to accommodate the varied interests of the group.

Because of these changes, the planning, coordination and execution of six weekly hikes had become a greater administrative task and had often led to confusion on the part of our members and planners.

In recognition of the complexity of managing and coordinating six separate hikes of different scope, degree of difficulty, length and location, etc., a new group is being formed that will focus solely on the traditional hikes: the original Turtle, Rabbit and Saturday hikes.

As stated, the new name will reflect a re-focus on these traditional hikes.  The new website, "High Desert Hikers", will not replace the current Ocotillo Hikers website. That website will remain active, althouh some of its content may change to reflect the changes announced here.  Keep in mind though, that the traditional Turtle, Rabbit and Saturday hikes will be posted only on the new website while the new alternate hikes will be communicated separately through e-mail announcements as an Ocotillo hike (as currently being done).

The new "High Desert Hikers" website will enhance communications for the traditional hikes and solicit your input on hikes, camping trips and special events as well as keeping you apprised of current hiking announcements.

We invite you to log-in to the new website and register so that you will have access to all the hikes and information made available.

Most importantly, we encourage you to continue to select a hike based on your interest and ability, and keep your options open to that which best suits you.

Welcome and happy hiking!

Why the name change...
